| As Hurricane Rita struck
Southeast Texas, the damage was inconceivable. The destruction
that Hurricane Rita caused has still left many people in the Southeast
Texas area without decent repairs to their homes.
Hurricane Rita's devastation impacted 96,471 family's
homes in the 22 county region of Southeastern Texas. Of these
damages, 5,233 single family dwellings were destroyed, 19,208 had major
damage, and 53,582 had minor damage. With the multi-family
dwellings, 483 homes were destroyed, |
 |
| 3,969 had major damage, and 2,213 had minor damage.
There were also 1,877 mobile homes that were destroyed, 4,304 had major
damage, and 5,612 had minor damage. |

The lack of habitable housing impacts local businesses
due to employee's inability to return to the area. With our
volunteers, for every hour that they work, it saves the homeowner $18.04
per hour in labor costs. Rita Recovery is a non-profit volunteer organization
that is working to help the people whose homes are still damaged due
to Hurricane Rita. As a partner with UMCOR, Rita Recovery's
mission is to help repair homes to those individuals that were
uninsured, under-insured, or under-assisted. |
| We
want for the pictures of the damage that Hurricane Rita brought to be
but a memory as we rebuild the homes of the people in this community.
We want to be able to look at the newer pictures, the pictures of the
rebuilt homes. This way, the people in Southeast Texas can restart
their life the way it was before Hurricane Rita struck land. |
