STAFF WORK DAYS
In December 2006, the Disaster Recovery,
formerly Rita Recovery
staff took a day off from the office and joined the construction staff
to work on a home. It was time for all of us who primarily stay in the
office to understand the scope of what volunteer teams are involved with
when they come to Southeast Texas.
So on Friday, December 1, 2006 the
staff were divided into two teams and sent on their way. One team
prepared a roof for new shingles and the other team did “inside work”
(i.e. drywall, plumbing, etc.). Many of us had never held a hammer,
used a cordless drill, hung drywall or put in a toilet. We laughed a
lot, we practiced teamwork, and we fellowshipped.
We held our second “work day” on
Friday, January 19, 2007. This time the Rita Recovery team went to
Orange. And on Friday, February 16 – one of the coldest days of the
year! – we worked on a home in Port Arthur.
These Staff Work Days have been a
real blessing. We truly appreciate the efforts of the many volunteers
who have come to help us recover from Hurricanes Rita and Ike and the many that
have yet to come.
Even more than a year and a half
after our first staff work day, we are still setting aside days to work
together out of the office with our hands. We still feel that this
is one of our greatest ways to fellowship and understand exactly what we
are asking so many of our volunteers to do. |
